Periódico-Periódico is an independent publishing project born at the intersection of graphic design, contemporary art, and collective research. Created by me; Dandara Hahn, with curator Daniela Avellar, and Designer Verônica Nunes, he project began with the desire to create a space where different forms of thought, artistic practice, and knowledge could coexist within a single publication.
The first issue, Care, starts with a simple yet expansive question: What does it mean to care? From this starting point, artists, researchers, and invited contributors were brought together to explore care as a personal, political, collective, and relational practice - in connection with the body, territory, memory, and one another.
Rather than simply organizing content into a publication, the project approaches editorial design as a form of inquiry. Essays, poems, photography, performance, and other forms of contribution coexist without establishing a hierarchy between different ways of producing and sharing knowledge.
My role extended across the project, from its initial conception and editorial development to art direction and graphic design. The challenge was to create a visual language capable of holding a highly diverse body of work together, while preserving the distinct voice and character of each contributor.
The visual language of Periódico-Periódico was intentionally built around Brazilian design and authorship. From the typefaces to the printed matter, the project sought to foreground local voices and expand the visibility of contemporary Brazilian graphic design within an experimental publishing context. The publication features Lygia, a typeface designed by Brazilian type designer Flávia Zimbardi, alongside other Brazilian design references, creating a visual ecosystem that feels both deeply rooted and deliberately experimental. Rather than treating Brazilian design as a stylistic reference, the project uses it as a starting point for experimentation, building a publication that reflects the plurality, inventiveness, and cultural complexity of contemporary Brazil.

The first issue was published by Satélite Books in 2023 and launched at the Jersey Art Book Fair in New Jersey, New York. The project was also featured by Fonts In Use, a leading reference for typography and graphic design, highlighting the publication’s typographic approach and visual language.

The publication later arrived in São Paulo with a launch event at Atelier Número, bringing together the project’s co-founders, collaborators, and readers. The event featured a conversation between the project’s initiators, Daniela Avellar and Dandara Hahn, alongside contributors to the issue, opening up a space to reflect on the ideas, processes, and conversations behind Periódico-Periódico.
